National Seizure Disorders Foundation invited Jennifer Schnegg here today to share her story in order to help you understand the life of a person living with seizures. Meet Jennifer Schnegg, a young woman wanting what is best for her in life. At a young age her dr eams of the future, her Joy, took a drastic change. She began experiencing seizures. As with most s eizure survivors, her journey with seizures had its high points and low points. Recently, Jennifer s journey took an especially troubling path. Suddenly she experienced what experts term atonic seizures. For the layman reader, an atonic seizure is otherwise known as a drop seizure and the name embodies urmet interphone the description. The person experiencing an atonic seizure suddenly loses all control over all muscle tone. There is no convulsing or rigidity. Exactly opposite, all muscles lose tone and the person experiencing this type of seizure drops . This type of seizure although not fatal on it s own has resulted in broken bones, bumps, and bruises. A widely used therapy for protection of the head during atonic seizures is a helmet. Jennifer uses her helmet because her atonic seizures are unpredictable.
Recently, because Jennifer experiences these seizures several times a week, Jennifer s doctor prescribed a trained seizure service/alert urmet interphone dog in order to alert to oncoming seizure of any type and help her through any seizure experienced. A special task seizure service dogs learn for those experiencing atonic seizures are to brace against a sudden fall of human weight. Remember, the seizure survivor during an atonic seizure has no muscle tone so the body weight is in some instances doubled because there is no help from the muscles to brace against a fall. These special seizure service dogs are also taught to brace in order to help a disoriented seizure survivor back to their feet. These tasks prevent bodily harm and aid in recovery because the presence of the dog distressed urmet interphone a confused seizure survivor during postictal phase immediately after seizure fades.
