A Penn State news release last week caught my eye and made me wish that Penn State Erie wasn’t nearly four hours away. They’ve got a chapel on their campus (the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel, to be precise) that has a carillon irish handfasting (the Floyd and Juanita Smith Carillon), and this summer they’re offering four carillon concerts. The first one is tomorrow night at 7 pm. Actually I’ve never given much thought to carillons, to be honest, and if that’s true for you as well, I really recommend you at least read the news release . I learned a bunch just in the course of that 300-word item: You can’t watch them playing, because they’re in a little room at the bottom of the bell tower. But Behrend is planning to stick a camera in the room and put the carilloneur on a TV monitor irish handfasting for the audience to see. The four concerts at Behrend this summer feature carilloneurs from the University of Denver and the University of Illinois, as well as the city carilloneur for Naperville, Ill. (who knew?) and the associate city carillonneur from Mechelen, Belgium, a city halfway between Antwerp and Brussels. The latter performer, Philippe Beullens, is the guy in the photo below. When I was at Iowa State, they played the carillon on central campus every hour on the hour and then there was a concert irish handfasting every day at noon and for special events. Donors refurbished the carillon and it is still played daily now. Loved hearing it across that huge campus when I was there. If all goes as planned, however, spring 2014 at EKU will also tickle the ears. The tradition of towers or carillons associated with universities vintage and reclaimed dates back to campuses as old as Oxford and Cambridge, said EKU President Michael Benson. Ringing bells to signify events such as graduation or even the passage of time is another tradition we intend to establish at Eastern. While EKU isn t quite as mature as England s finest universities, it nonetheless has a history just as proud and unique. Representatives of the Verdin Co., the original installer, were on campus on Monday, Dec. 16, to remove the bells, vintage and reclaimed which range in weight from 25 to 1,000 pounds, and transport them to the firm s plant in Cincinnati. Company officials said the cast bronze bells are in good condition, but need new supporting hardware as well as a new supporting frame structure. All the existing internal components in each bell will be removed, and each bell will be cleaned to be free of all deteriorated components. Each bell will be sandblasted and wire-brushed to present a like-new finish. A new structure-steel bell frame will be constructed to accommodate all static and dynamic loads based on modern engineering standards, and a custom spring isolator system will isolate vibrations to the bell tower structure. The project also includes the addition of a master control system that utilizes state-of-the-art electronic technology with complete programming vintage and reclaimed systems for fully automatic and semi-automatic vintage and reclaimed control of the carillon, even remotely, according to Verdin. Users will be able to move the console anywhere. The Carillon Master will be prepackaged with 100 custom melodies, including holiday vintage and reclaimed and other seasonal selections, and can contain up to 10,000 music selections, which can be recorded on site using the included keyboard. The system vintage and reclaimed also will be capable of celebration peals, Westminster chimes, time strikes, tolls and scheduling. Based in Cincinnati, Verdin is one of the oldest vintage and reclaimed family-owned companies in America. No help returned from our local community and the decision was made to reach out to the nation. Still, funds were just trickling in. A pup was donated an a trainer found in preparation. We were 650 dollars away from our goal. After much time, we decided jacob jacobsen to change our plan and have someone living with her and her now age 7 daughter. NSDF went on to raise funds and build relationships for others to get service dogs…still, donations were rare. After returning from the mailbox, I excitedly reached for the phone and was surprised and the synchronicity, Jesy’s (Jesy&Ana)name and number were on the caller ID SHE was calling ME! I picked up the phone and happily blurted out the good news ” We DID IT, WE DID IT, NO MORE FEAR JESY’S SEIZURE ALERT DOG IS HERE!” I squealed. My excitement was returned with silence then suddenly uncontrollable sobs from her live in fiance, her daughters father. His words came out so fast the were all jumbled as I heard them “I’m jacob jacobsen sorry, I’m sorry,,, she fell….she was alright….she seized and was on the ground….she….she…she…I’m sorry….mom, she’s gone….she was alone and she’s gone.” Thinking he was shaken after a difficult seizure episode with her, I told him it would be okay just let her rest. In 1961, MacColl wrote the song as part of a larger work called The Big Hewer, which was broadcast as a radio documentary about the lives of coal miners.
