For the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics , movie director Danny Boyle said he’s aiming for intimacy rather than spectacle. “We wanted to make the feel of the opening ceremony wireless door bells … intimate and personal,” he said in an interview today. Four months ago I read this article about an up and coming social networking site called CircleMe and decided to try it out, as I often do with any social platform that seems to be “the next big thing”. After spending some time getting to know the community and meeting some interesting folks, I was starting to dig the platform but a new social networking site showed up and everything changed… What is CircleMe and why I decided to give it a go In case you’ve mechanical doorbell never heard of it, CircleMe helps you collect your interests in one place by pulling them from your Facebook Likes, Foursquare checkins, Goodreads catalog and Netflix streaming activity. The appeal of the whole process is that all this collecting and organizing allows you to engage with others based on their likes, while promotes cultivating new interests through the discovery mechanical doorbell of new information or the recommendation between users. Since CircleMe was still in Beta I patiently waited for an invite and created a profile as soon as it arrived. At first I liked the experience: The aesthetic of the site is super nice. The conversations with other users were slowly arising (always via messages because you don’t have walls or comment boxes). And I could continue adding items to this list all day long. If there’s anything negative about the current state of Chime.in it would be that it has attracted mechanical doorbell too many ghost users who are probably only using the platform to place links to their sites, but it’s just a matter of not engaging with them and keep on connecting with real people. Tl;dr: CircleMe is a dead social platform, wanting to create mechanical doorbell a connection with another person there is like trying to make friends with a collectible sticker album. Chime.in is filled with people who are open to discussions and are not afraid of engaging with others. End of the story. Poor CircleMe, I went on there and I seriously didn’t get it. Death by Domain: Social Networking Site Chime.in | People of Shambhala You may not have heard of Chime.in, but, launched in 2011, this social networking site was presented by its founding company — UberMedia — as a competitor to Facebook and Twitter among others. One of its early attractions was the promise of revenue sharing. Just as bloggers can earn money from AdSense — with the blogger earning a commission from ads that appear on his or her site — so Chime.in promised dolores krieger to share its ad revenue. The revenue sharing idea didn’t come to fruition. But Chime.in was, nonetheless, not a bad social networking site, at least aesthetically. And design counts a lot. So why did it close down in September 2013 (just perhaps to be relaunched some time down the road)? First of all, although perhaps slightly more pleasing to look at than Twitter, Chime.in really added nothing new to social networking. True, users were meant to connect around subjects of mutual interest (this was alleged to be a new idea in social networking) rather than around friends and family (a la Facebook). But hashtag use with Twitter, and now with Facebook too, meant that this idea really wasn’t so novel after all. There were some good things. People of Shambhala dolores krieger had a Chime.in account, and we found it useful dolores krieger for posting links to articles. Images showed up nicely. And while Facebook often has problems displaying smaller images, there was no such issue with Chime.in. That was a big plus. The biggest problem was, or at least began with, its url. There’s an interesting specialist fashion networking site: theyenvy.us. It’s a cool name that captures the spirit of the site’s users, but you’ll also note the clever use of the domain (dot us), which, in the context of the whole url,is transformed from US (united States) to “us”. No additional dot com or dot org to type. Nice. But, while dot us may not be a particularly desirable domain, They Envy Us nevertheless still retained the cache of being a US-based dolores krieger social network through it. The dot in domain dolores krieger — clever though dolores krieger it may have been in the abstract — seems to have meant that the site was more attractive to Indian citizens than to Americans. And it’s Americans that have, so far, launched social networking sites. Where Americans go online, the rest of the world follows. Since People of Shambhala has a global outlook, dolores krieger and writes about issues that concern residents of India (as well as those based in the US and elsewhere), we were able to reach that audience directly. It was good for us. But it probably wasn’t so good for, say, US bloggers writing exclusively about local US culture or politics. There were other issues, of course. Who knew about Chime.in? Most people didn’t. Chime.in subordinated itself to other social dolores krieger networking sites by allowing people to log in through dolores krieger Facebook or Twitter, when it should have competed more aggressively against them. But getting known and competing effectively required a different domain. Both Facebook and Twitter use dot com. Dot in is unfamiliar to Americans, and to Westerners more generally, and what’s unfamiliar on the web can be construed as untrustworthy or as irrelevant. How many Americans dolores krieger have ever clicked on a dot in url? Not many. In the day and age of fishing websites, choosing an unknown domain meant the site was always going to fighting an uphill battle for clicks. If Chime In ever comes back, it should use dot com, or present itself as an Indian-focussed social networking site. With India’s rising economy, that could prove a lucrative investment a couple of decades from now. We already know that women rule social media . There are more women users on Facebook and Twitter, and they spend more time than men on these sites. What makes certain social networking sites more female or male oriented? Less than 15% of Wikipedia editors are women. Only 36% of Digg users are women, and its content doesn t exactly scream gender equality . Meanwhile, Pinterest (a virtual pinboard sharing site) seems to be a community multimc mostly made of women . New social network Chime.in is actually not calling itself social, but an interest network. This means it will revolve around subjects, like tech, rather than people. Is there a clear divide between the two? And what does the answer to this potentially mean for women? For now, Chime.in appears to be a gender-neutral place where men and women can speak and share freely and equally. Then again, so did Google+ , which is still only 31% women . The most headline-grabbing aspect of Chime.in has been the concept that it could generate cash for users through advertising sales, leading multimc to a deluge of get-rich commentary. Will the site even be social? Or a profit-driven interest site for the self-interested? As for whether women will buy into Chime.in, it depends on whether it caters to their basic roles and natures. Women are expected to be caregivers. They get pregnant. They have families. They are the glue of their interconnected communities. They can t be 100% self-interested. Perhaps this is why they tend to dominate community based social networking like Facebook, rather than linear, systematic sites like Wikipedia. Women won t chime in to a site without a strong community. Chime.in won t have much of a relationship with women unless it remembers what keeps them interested--a place that feels like an extended family, a real community in their virtual worlds. They're predictably called "chimes," and they're like a Facebook-Reddit-Blog combo post. Chimes can be 4,000 characters max, displaying a headline, a few sentences of text as a preview, an image or video, profile picture, and tags. Plus there's a comment thread for each chime, and an upvote-downvote system. Chimes are also categorized—a doorbell ringtone key part of that "interest network" idea—creating a much more structured version of the hashtag system on Twitter. Every chime needs to be tagged before being posted, so that they're ready to slide into users' categorized feeds. Chimes can also be saved for later, like "favoriting" a tweet. But here's the kicker, and the biggest selling point for businesses to adopt Chime.in. doorbell ringtone You're given control of the advertising and sponsorships on your profile page. You can have either UberMedia publish the ads for you (and it will take a 50 percent chunk of what you make from the ads), or do it yourself and keep 100 percent of the profits: simple, and fully controllable, monetization. You also have the opportunity to run advertisements on the Chime.in mobile app, which has nearly doorbell ringtone all the features that the website does. Yes, the ad revenue model alone warrants a test run from businesses. And remember, it costs your business nearly nothing. So what have you got to lose? After all, setting up a page, learning how to use it and chiming daily aren't huge investments. But be patient with it, and monitor the network's overall progress. Social doorbell ringtone sites don't just blow up overnight, and with the space already so cluttered no one knows if Chime.in will actually take off.
