Dogs over 50 lbs, are stronger, but it also depends on the dog. Any dog CAN BE A SERVICE DOG with the right level of DESIRE. Some are better at a certain jobs than others. GREAT JOB!!
Did the gael song you know that October is Disability Awareness the gael song month here at National Seizure Disorder’s Foundation? It is!!! It is also Halloween!!!!! I told you in last months Tanner’s Tips, that this is a scary, and can be DEADLY month for pets, and service dogs like me. Lets “Speak” about a few more things….so “SIT”.
How many types of service dogs are there? To list the types by job would take all day, and would truly be a pain in my paws!!!! According to Wikipedia, a service dog like myself is defined as: A type of dog specifically trained to help people who have disabilities including the gael song visual difficulties, hearing impairments, mental illness, seizures, diabetes, Autism, and more! Desirable character traits in your typical service animal, typically include good temperament or psychological make-up (including biddability and tranquility) and good health (including physical structure and stamina). So, why do I tell you this? Well its simple really. When a human gets a life changing diagnosis, they tend to shut down. Not many of you think, when you look at us from across the room, that we can change that.
OK…Lets talk about Service dogs like me, and others, that do services for our human partner. Depending on the type of service, there are a variety of dog breeds that are well suited the gael song to a service lifestyle. Police typically use German Shepherds (that’s the gael song me), Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, Bloodhounds, Beagles, and Rottweilers , but again, each dog has to be properly trained and tested to make sure they are suitable to the service at hand. Raisins: NO! No! No! The consumption of grapes and raisins, presents a potential health threat to dogs. Their toxicity to dogs can cause the animal to develop acute renal failure (the sudden development of kidney failure) with anuria (a lack of urine production).
Chocolate: (White, Milk, and Dark) Serious poisoning happens more frequently in domestic animals, which metabolize Theobromine much more slowly than humans, and can easily consume enough chocolate to cause chocolate poisoning. the gael song If large numbers of filled chocolate candies are consumed another serious danger is posed by the fat and sugar in the fillings which can sometimes trigger life threatening pancreatitis several days later. The most common victims of theobromine poisoning are dogs, for which it can be fatal. The toxic dose for cats, is even lower than for dogs.
