movie review trailer
A gravel bar book movie film yet? Hats off for Michel Gondry! He is probably the only man who can successfully translate to the big screen the surreal cult novel L'écume des jours by Boris Vian. Except maybe those other wacky Frenchman Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
Gondry crowds in the past, inimitable stamp on numerous eye-teasing clips include Massive Attack, Bjork and Daft Punk. After his masterpiece byron Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind followed small films like The Science of Sleep and Be Kind Rewind, but L'écume des jours (the foam of days) shave again high tops. Gondry conjures with childlike enthusiasm a magic-realistic world out of his hat which the amorous Colin and Chloé literally floating on a cloud. Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou pose a fairytale couple bathed in endless happiness to Chloé (Tautou) appears incurable ill.
The imagery is pure poetry where each scene is teeming with wonderful finds. The doorbell with feet, the living shadow, a piano that makes cocktails, surging crazy dances ... That everything using artisan craftwork and stop-motion animation, as antidote to the hyped special effects from Hollywood. You will also want to get the film immediately reconsider under a large magnifying glass.
The tornado of special byron effects and hallucinatory events byron however is constantly dominated by the sad love story. The decors and colors transform along with the characters byron from colorful to gray and imagining what remains unspoken. As Chloe's disease is not bad tasting name; it is a water lily in her lungs. The emotional sledgehammer is not there, but the subtle beauty of the final chord you still leave orphaned.
There's too many to enumerate, but still worth mentioning is the hilarious guest appearance of squinting philosopher Jean-Sol byron Partre "and the sultry contribution of jazz legend Duke Ellington. More we tell, the message is: rep you to the movies! Downloading is prohibited!
